چکیده

A number of drying methods studied for the processing of Spirulina (crossflow dried, spray dried and oven dried) resulted in approximately 50% loss of phycocyanin. Therefore fresh biomass was suitable for phycocyanin extraction. Of the extraction methods tested, freezing and thawing of cells, homogenisation using a mortar and pestle in the presence of abrasive material and homogenisation using a blender at 10 000 rpm yielded 19.490.4 mg phycocyanin per 100 mg dry weight of Spirulina while water extraction was a slow process. Acid treatment also resulted in phycocyanin leaching. Phycocyanin was stable over a pH range of 5–7.5 at 991°C, whereas temperature beyond 40°C lead to instability. The pigment phycocyanobilin was separated from the phycocyanin. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimization of light conditions by affecting the growth and production of C-Phycocyanin in Spirulina platensis microalgae

Spirulina microalgae are a rich source of protein and valuable biological compounds. One of the most important Spirulina microalgae pigments is phycocyanin. Phycocyanin is widely used in industries as a natural blue pigment and it’s also an effective antioxidant. In order to improve phycocyanin production as well as Spirulina growth, by autotrophic cultivation considering that autotrophic culti...

C-PHYCOCYANIN EXTRACTION FROM Spirulina platensis WET BIOMASS

C-Phycocyanin is a natural blue dye used in food and pharmaceutical industry. In the present study, a simple and efficient method to extract C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis wet biomass is reported. The extractions were carried out using six different methods, including chemical (organic and inorganic acid treatment), physical (freezing and thawing, sonication, homogenization) and enzymat...

Stable Isolation of Phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis Associated with High-Pressure Extraction Process

A method for stably purifying a functional dye, phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis was developed by a hexane extraction process combined with high pressure. This was necessary because this dye is known to be very unstable during normal extraction processes. The purification yield of this method was estimated as 10.2%, whose value is 3%-5% higher than is the case from another conventional sep...

Enhancement of biomass and phycocyanin content of Spirulina platensis.

Response surface methodology (RSM) based on the 23 factorial central composite design (CCD) was employed to evaluate optimum culture conditions (temperature, light irradiance and agitation) to enhance biomass and phycocyanin content of Spirulina platensis. The predicted maximum biomass and phycocyanin content by RSM was 1.06 g L-1 and 107 mg L-1, respectively, whereas maximum biomass and phycoc...

Protective Effect of Spirulina and Phycocyanin on Testicular Tissue and Sperm Parameters in Adult Rats Treated with Hydrogen Peroxide

Background and purpose: About 50% of infertility in couples is related to male factors and oxidative stress is one of the main causes of infertility in men. Hydrogen peroxide has an adverse effect on male reproductive system due to its free radicals. Spirulina and phycocyanin are known to have antioxidant properties and can modify stressors. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, ...
